Panic Attacks (Panic Disorder)

The first panic attack may come on suddenly and can occur while one is doing something that one does every day like driving to work, shopping, watching TV, cooking etc. All of a sudden one can be struck by frightening and distressing symptoms and become convinced that something terrible is going to happen. Individuals can also encounter a panic attack when confronting or anticipating particular things or situations.  Panic sufferers find that they are more likely to have panic attacks in certain situations although it does not always happen.  One may find that they have good days and bad days. 

Panic Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • Chills or hot flushes
  • Sweating
  • Feeling dizzy or faint
  • Nausea Chest pain or discomfort
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Choking feeling
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Feeling detached from your surroundings
  • Feeling helpless
  • Feeling agitated
  • Fear of dying or losing control
  • Fear of another panic attack
  • Avoiding places or situations associated with past attack

Panic attacks can be triggered by physical illness, major stress, or is a side effect of certain medications. Individuals with panic disorder may also suffer from social anxiety, PTSD and OCD.  In therapy one learns to change thought patterns and reactions to panic attack triggers.  Reducing caffeine and alcohol may be helpful.  Education regarding panic disorder, its causes, outcome and management is critical.
